So on MeiZen's maiden voyage I tried using my old Note II in airplane mode, gps on with Rever software, I have the USB and cigarette lighter option on MeiZen so I plugged a cable from the USB to the Note II (she was charging and at 99%). All worked excellent, except for two things:

1) the note goes to sleep after a set amount of time (I had it set to 10 min which was max) and to get it back on you have to push the home button and then swipe the screen and with gloves on this ain't happening.

2) The Note II was sucking down more power than the USB could provide (99% at start and charging went down to 46% and still charging one hour later)

So it seems that this solution is not really practical.

Maybe I will go this route TomTom Rider 5th Edition w/ Lifetime Maps (Exclusive Eagle Edition)

Keep a lookout on ADV flea market Keith. Have seen a LOT of used Zumo 550s going for less than $300 and in great shape. I use a Zumo 550 and it is VERY dependable.

I am not a Garmin fan, too many bad experiences (Nuvi(s) and customer service). I have never owned a Zumo maybe much better. The only good Garmin I have owned is my GPS60csx but even that has quirky limitations.

Keith, I'm aware of gloves that allow you to use a touch screen. Gloves like that would be a benefit no matter which device you choose.

I'm also aware of 12v power supplies with higher amperage capability; perhaps a higher end power supply would meet your needs with the Note II.

Yes I will have to look up the specs on how much the USB is capable of putting out.

It may be a low output usb, probably need a 2a to run the screen at full bright over the course of the day.

Easiest solution is probably a 12v cig plug usb adapter rated at 2a. The only issue with them is they vibrate lose sometimes and you have to push it in again . Same issue as any 12v on a bike though.

I use the Nexus 7 and my Alcatel Idol 3 on mine, the Nexus will drain battery if your not using a 2a source on full brightness. The Alcatel only needs half brightness as it's a newer model.

Honestly the 149 dollar Moto G 2nd gen seems to be the best phone/tablet for use on bikes, it's IPX7 rated as well.

As mentioned the gloves that are touchscreen friendly help.

Try in About Phone, tap rapidly on Build Number on the bottom. There will be popup text that says "you are 4 steps away from being a developer!" So rapid tap 4 more times and then tap back key, and Developer Options should be back in Settings. Should be "stay awake while charging" in there.

I was hoping I would hear from you.
What about the battery not charging fast enough to keep up with use.?

Other than these issues it worked very well.

I don't know the output of the USB on the RX3, if its 5v 1a it won't be enough to keep up with the phone. If its 2.1amp then its maybe the cable if its proprietary. I needed a special cable to charge my galaxy tab 10.1 a while back. Is the USB cable a Samsung design and not micro/mini USB?

USB resistor box thingy

If you look at the plug in resistor for the USB power, does it have specs printed on it?

Now I am not sure which cable I grabbed, I will have to check

good point on the charge cable. I've had a number of off brand ones that would always result in a "slow charge" indication when plugged in.

I will down load (Ampere) app for charging info this will allow me to see which cables and ports work best.

Have any of you tried the conductive thread sewn into your gloves for touch screen use?
