The shoulder straps do indeed come off. They actually come inside the bag along with the rest of the straps. I wouldn't honestly trust the straps to hold too much weight due to the clips being made out of a cheap feeling plastic, but they do function just fine. I simply unbuckle mine and carry it by the handle. It has been working great so far with carrying my lunch, drink, and other random items. It also has a couple of pockets on the lid, including one internal zippered pocket for holding things like your registration papers.
Honestly, if somebody were to come out with a slightly better quality version of this bag, I would buy it. Metal clips and buckles and slightly thicker/better straps and construction. It's not bad as is, but with a bit better construction it would truly be top notch.

I got my top box today, and while it does take away from the bike ,as far as looks, it will be practical for my needs. It has no problem closing on my full face helmet while laying on top of a lined windbreaker. The lock has a nice big hook, and steel pin .Comes with 2 keys. The reflectors look like lights, but have no sockets. It has a wide tab on the front that slips into a wide slot , and a recessed bolt on the other end that goes through to the mounting grid that attatches to the rear rack. It can be removed in seconds without tools, but may have to be unpacked ,or rearranged to gain access to the rear bolt. It does have a slight indentation to serve as a carrying handle if needed. I can't complain for $34 buck. It looks a little bigger than it actually is in the pictures, because of the bad camera angle .http://

Luggage never looks good. Even on bikes like my VFR where it was designed for the bike and in a wind tunnel, it looks awkward. Practicality beats looks at the end
of the day.

I added LED light strips behind my lens. I have brake and turn signals.
