I have a couple of observations I need to add as I've been riding this puppy under the radar to work.

The exhaust shield touches your leg and although it never gets "burn your leg hot" it does get quite warm - so shorts are out (and yes you shouldn't wear shorts anyway, but it happens).

Riding 2-up there is a mystery box that is held in by two tiny screws on two tiny dog ears that can easily be kicked off by accident. I have since 'adjusted' this with zip ties, but out of the box over time this thing will work / get kicked off.

I have girl hands so the clutch and brake levers are pretty big (to me at least) takes some getting used to.

Daddy

Looks like some emission control nonsense. Maybe a charcoal canister or fuel vapor catcher?

I'd think about $hitcanning it.

What did you pay?

I can kinda fantasize about selling Q and the Yamaha 400 and getting one as it would fill the role of commuter and dirt bike well.

Problem is I'm emotionally attached to Q and the Yamaha...

Yep, I'd make the mystery box go away, once the bike is properly titled and plated.

Maybe an aftermarket exhaust is in order to solve the heat shield issue. As an example, look at Spud's before and after exhaust pics on his Zong. The Yamaha head pipe is a much nicer fit than the OEM stuff. You might find a head pipe that is a much better fit also (perhaps from a DR400?).

If the exhaust has a cat in it, it will create lots of extra heat.

I would guess that the Mystery Box is a charcoal canister as well. certainlt emissions hardware.

The "manual" does mention emissions control.... I will 86 it as soon as I get the title and all that joy. As far as a new pipe: It would need to be a 1:1 fit as I am the world's worst welder. Just eyeballing it won't do the trick methinks. If there is a cat in there I'm going in and 'adjusting' it. Even slow trail riding in pants you aren't going to get burned, but it is warm and can deliver a good start to you if you aren't ready for it.

Doc - it was just a hair shy of 3K delivered to my door

I agree with the others; the "mystery box" has got to be some kind of fuel vapor cannister. I would definitely ditch it as soon as I got my license plate.

If the engine is a Xingyue design, and not a clone of a Japanese engine, modifying the bike will be more challenging; if this is this case, welding/fabricating skills will be a big asset.

P.S. A rumor is circulating that a newer model of this motorcycle will be fuel injected, to meet emissions standards. If true, this development could be either good, or bad, depending on the price difference, and the reliability of the new electronics.

3K huh?

Good price but couldn't swing it now. Max I could get from Q and my 400 would be about 2K and that would be pushing it.

I'm happy. Its all good.

Noticed in the pic that is has GY400xingyue on the plastic. That confirms up any doubt to its origins.

I wonder what big four exhaust may be the closest match.

I've been away for a while but one of us finally got a Pitster!! I remember when the 400 Xingyues came out a couple years ago and we all debated and speculated what they were like. I don't think any of the members bought one, although some of the members on Mychinamoto own them, but they kind of don't count because they live in South America or Asia I hope to read ongoing reports on this bike, and hopefully someone with one of the 250's will start a thread.

Congrats, Daddy!![/i]
