The 1926 house I bought last year comes with this old dirt-floor cinder block garage, originally with knob and tube electrical, and the original owner was some sort of mechanic. Yesterday I found a points file, well-used but still usable. It's like doing archaeology in there. There's also a fair amount of gardening tools and a couple of big hammers. I never know what I am going to run across.

A few days ago I finally got around to installing a couple of four foot long 5000-lumen LED shop lights from HF. Cheap and what a huge difference! Before that, the only lighting I had was from the four windows, so it was always a bit murky in there. I used headlamps and flashlights a lot.

I have one of those hanging on my shop wall. It's good for breaking beads but that's about it. Keep us posted on the ultrasonic unit and how well it works. I've been wanting one.

The Carrot is coming along nicely! Have you measured the frame tolerances? There's nothing worse than a bent carrot, ya know..... ;-)

3. I assure you I do not have a bent carrot.....wait, what were we talking about again?

Did some cleaning today with Simple Green, to see what stuff looked like under the dirt. Cleaned the engine, frame, and all painted parts except the swingarm. (Got hungry.)

Pic 1: Right crankcase cover. Still crusty.
Pic 2: Left side looks better, but still.
Pic 3: Wider view of left.

Eventually, when I separate the motor and frame, the frame will get a deep clean, some sanding, priming, and get sprayed with Rustoleum Khaki, a flat camouflage color. Then a flat clearcoat. Might do some small pieces like the chainguard and spare gas tank bracket in flat brown.

For the rest of the month, the daytime high temps are gonna range from the teens to the 30s, so probably not much will get done for the rest of the winter. (Unheated garage.) I will order the ultrasonic cleaner, and build a wooden engine cradle so I can do stuff with the motor in the comfort of my enclosed and heated porch. Also ordering some JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) screwdrivers, not sure which set yet.

Fave JIS set, but $$: https://www.amazon.com/0059-005-Japa...%2C103&sr=8-12

Ultrasonic cleaner: https://www.amazon.com/VEVOR-Commerc...10&sr=8-4&th=1

Engine cradle. Two boards are 9 5/8" long and two are 6 1/8" long. Glued and screwed.

Try doing this search on Amazon. Cost I see is $78.41. I like these because you can put a wrench on the end for torque, they are full-tang therefore impact, and magnetic tip. Plus the extra bits are useful for a drill or small-bit screwdriver.

Built the engine cradle. My woodworking skills are at the grade-school summer camp level. Found a nice used 2x6 in my garage that I could repurpose. I think 2x4 would work just as well.

More or less followed the instruction on the video three posts up. I didn't have clamps nor want to go buy them, so I skipped that step. Fatal mistake of course. What I did instead was pre-drill each hole through both boards that the screw would contact, reasoning that this would be my clamping mechanism after gluing the short boards. What I should have done was only pre-drill through one board, not both, then carefully line up the boards before sending the screw all the way through. The result is that some of my corners do not perfectly line up, and there is a little rocking as well.

I used 3M heavy duty duct tape (more or less like Gorilla Tape, but cheaper) rather than a tool chest drawer liner, again for cost considerations. We'll see how that goes. To solve the rocking, I used three narrow pieces of duct tape as a shim in one corner. Functionally, I think it will be fine. Now I can pull the motor and work on it inside.

Another way to level it would be to make a plywood base. Plus then you can store loose parts inside it.

Total cost = $0. All just stuff I had laying around.

Since the temp today shot up to 38F, I decided to pull the motor to clean it up a bit. Two bolts and five wires, really easy. Motor weighs about 50 lbs, frame about 20 lbs. Simple Green, a nylon brush, a little bit of light sanding. Tomorrow I will hit it with Gunk foamy Engine Cleaner, for a moar betterer result.

While you have it stripped down and upside-down, don't forget to dig out the old exhaust gasket, it is easily overlooked and forgotten about when the engine is right side up.

Yeah, need new exhaust gasket and will order new studs and nuts. The nuts are frozen to the old ones, so the studs came out.

Degreased the motor. I didn't expect it to remove all the staining, and of course it didn't. But the cases are as good as they are gonna get. The large covers will get more attention later.
