Thanks for the well wishes! It looks like the Ural Patrol T will be my next bike. Just made the deal. As soon as my taxes are done, I'll move forward on the purchase. The dealer has agreed to take my KLX250 on trade for the new Ural.
The Can-Am Spyder is too expensive. I can't spend that kind of cash on something like that. It's a great machine and I have ridden them. Very nice! Just too pricey for me. I still plan to finish the Diesel KLR to have an off-road bike. Oh, and the best Lotus is of course, the Seven. I have one of those too. Sadly it is not finished. Still trying to decide on an engine. I may go with a Yamaha R1 engine.

Pierer has indicated that he will transfer ownership of Husqvarna to KTM later. It only makes sense that he will try to make as much as possible from KTM on the sale. They plan to dominate the off-road market with KTM-Husaberg-Husqvarna-Bajaj group of manufacturers. Hopefully, they have something for everyone.

Looking forward to you working some Sam magic on the Ural! Also happy to see that the Diesel KLR is back on.

I've actually started measuring frame components and putting together a plan for the Diesel KLR. The plan is to stretch the KLR frame a few inches to fit a Harley-Davidson transmission.
The Ural is month or two out.

I think you mentioned using an HD trans in the diesel thread; I think that's the simplest and most robust option. Are you planning on a five speed? Do you plan to convert a belt primary / final to chain, or are you starting with a pre-Evo trans?

I'm still thinking about the Yamaha powered Lotus! 150HP or so in a 1450 lb car should provide some snappy performance! And reliable. And the sound will be awesome!

Too many projects not enough time or money.
Yes, the idea for the Diesel KLR is to use a 5-speed EVO transmission. I'm going to use square tubing to build a new lower cradle with the engine and tranny connected by a chain primary. I want to use the hydraulic clutch system from my KTM 950. The backbone of the frame will be extended with round tubing placed inside the original backbone. 3 or 4" should do it. I may try to stick everything together to have a roller this week. The bike has an aluminum Kawasaki KLR600 subframe and rear fender. Keeping it light should help the 13hp engine move the bike. I don't expect it to be fast. Looking for a 70mph topspeed. Hopefully!

Sam,
Reading between the lines I get the impression you have time and money, but you are blessed with too many projects and are spread too thin.

Sam, I'm really looking forward to the revival of the diesel project. I'm requesting updates in your diesel thread, as they come available.
Until then, how will you address the pulley vs sprocket issue on the Evo trans? Have you already established that the stroke of the KTM actuator matches the HD? I'm geekin' out over this!

FastDoc,
I have a little money. Actually, I have a great job! The Lotus project is something that I am saving for my retirement. It's not something that I need right now. It's for me and the wife to travel in, for getaway weekends. I'd like it to have a soft top and heater. Basically it will be very simple and basic. Power nothing, no power brakes or steering. It just doesn't require it. The 2.3L Lima engine that I have is too powerful for it. The rear Dana 35 from my Jeep Wrangler will work perfectly in it. I just purchased a Dana 44 for the Wrangler. It needs rebuilt, so that's another project to add to the list. The R1 engine in the Lotus makes the build much easier and lighter. Weldandgrind, The only thing I need for the Diesel KLR is the transmission. Well, my custom rear 17" rear wheel needs relaced to an 18" wheel. It seems to me that I have seen chain conversions on modern Harley builds. I'll contact the transmission makers to see what's available in a chain final drive. I haven't checked the stroke on the KTM hydraulic reservoir. I may need to use a combination of parts to make that work. Buying the URAL Patrol frees me from thinking about any other projects but the Diesel KLR. My 950 and Versys KLR projects are over with. I wasted too much time on those bikes.

Sam,
I see there are many kits for the Lotus 7. Do any of those use a motorcycle engine? I love the idea of a light simple sports car pulling out of a increasing radius uphill turn at 13,000 RPM. 8)

The Deman 7 is the only one that I know of. What really gets me going about the R1/Lotus is the fact that I could use paddle shifters on it. A simple sequential shifter would work too. Very simple to make. There are a couple of companies that make air shifters which would work well on it. The front sprocket is removed on the R1 engine and a driveshaft adapter goes in it's place. No reverse is a major bummer but that can be worked out. There are a few options there as well. Since the R1 engine and transmission are a single unit packaging is much easier. A cradle will need to be made to hold everything. Simple tubing and poly bushings lowered into brackets welded to the Lotus frame. I'd like to use a full belly pan on the car. The R1 radiator and an oil cooler will easily fit into the space made for the car radiator.

Ask the wife to push? It's a light car. I had a Karmen Ghia with a broken reverse. Maybe you could work out an electric reverse like a Gold Wing which uses the starter motor to back up the bike. Clever and no added weight.
