haven't updated for a while....
I got all the bits and pieces back on the bike and purchased a new battery for it as well. At this point, it's cranking. I still have two fuel lines from the tank to the petcock to install before I can try firing up the bike....but at least it's cranking and acting like a bike should. here's a walk-around of where she stands now. don't get too excited. she's a 20 footer. if you get close you can see the wrinkles. I still need to get new tires, but the ones that are on it are ok for a test run. Forks are bad, for sure. again...ok for a test run, but need fixed badly. I have started the process of getting a bonded title for it. Note the rear brake rotor is pretty rusty. I'd like to get that and a few other pieces that are rusty cleaned up to make it look presentable. |

so...good news and bad. got the remaining fuel lines in the mail. got them installed and gave the old girl a try. rear carb was spewing gas out of the overflow tube. I shut it down and had to put it away before I could do much troubleshooting. Likely it's a stuck float, so next step will be to beat on the carb a few times to see if I can free it up. if that doesn't work, I'll need to remove the carb and inspect in the float bowl. if no luck there, I'll ship it back to the guy that rebuilt them and ask him to take a deeper look.

I always just. Pull the carbs on anything that has sat. It's very rare for.the carb to be in good working order after sitting.

it's only sat for about a month. carbs were just rebuilt. this is just the first time flowing gas thru to fire the bike up.

Inline fuel filters? Lord only knows what may have left the tank and took the big trip down to a needle seat.

Puking fuel out of the throat or the bowl? Throat, stuck float or crap betwixt the needle and seat. Bowl, possibly a cracked overflow tube.

it'll be hard to tell at this point because I already have it apart. the needle was clean when I pulled it out. I also used a q-tip to clean inside the tube. it was clean. I blew some air through the fuel inlet. I'm going to check/measure the float distance when the needle is seated to be sure the float is pushing the needle up far enough. I can adjust that if needed.
Other than that, I don't know what else to try. This setup is new to me in that the intruder uses a fuel pump to push gas up to the two carbs. The fuel line from the pump sits low in the frame under the electricals. it pushes fuel up to the rear carb and there's a pass-through sending the fuel on up to the front carb. it's the original pump. Because I don't know much about them, to me it seems like there's too much pressure and fuel is blowing by the needle. I'm inclined to think that's not the case, but I'm in the dark at this point. |

The fuel tank appears to be higher than the carb location...
I would try a fuel pump by pass and go from tank to carb direct and see if gravity feed is enough...maybe it is maybe it isnt. Can't see any harm in trying. Not sure if the fuel shut off is also electronically controlled, but you could just try pulling the fuse for the pump and seeing if fuel is still flowing through the factory lines... From what is described the pump is used to get supply passed the 1st into the second carb. a Y spit in the fuel line supplying fuel in parallel rather than in series might achieve the same outcome... |

after a lot of trial/error with the carbs overflowing, I'm pulling them today and sending them back to the company that rebuilt them. I just can't figure out why they are pumping fuel out the overflow tube.
I'm also going to pull the front forks and take them to a shop for rebuild. I could do it, but these guys don't charge too much and really do a good job.

so, I finally got the carbs out and boxed up. They went out today. Hopefully will have them back by next week. I've been totally distracted by my KLR project and a weekend of goofing off.
