Very interesting and thoughtful input by everyone that posted.. I put my canister on the inlet to the engine instead of the sump line.. again, who knows what was inside the cooler from the manufacturing plant, and how much buildup it will collect over time.
I think it would be interesting over time to check the different oil passages on the way from inlet to outlet and see if there is a noticeable difference in temperature.
If the bottom of the cooler begins to run hotter over a recorded length of time, then you would know that the flow is becoming restricted due to buildup of sediment.
Just a thought.
Also, IMO, the screen orientation won't matter in the end.
I really appreciated all the different theories into why it is oriented the way it is. Was extremely interesting. But in the end, it's literally the size of a window screen. Just like camping in a tent. You're still gonna get some bugs through it here and there.

Or for that matter, a brand new cooler inlet/outlet temp vs. a cooler that has been used awhile should also give a good idea as to whether or not the cooler is filling with sediment.
More than a three degree difference would let you know the cooler is becoming restricted.
