Maybe. But the smell of gas in the airbox could be from engine panting. Panting is caused by the intake valve closing, causing the in-rushing gases to pile up against the valve until there is enough energy to reflect the gas back out the carburetor, onto the aircleaner medium. Especially a dry paper element. If oil mist is coming up the crankcase breather line, it will coat the element slightly, and capture the gas panting out of the engine. Then it smells like raw gas in there. Put in a PCV unit, and exhaust the vent line elsewhere.
