Hey guys.
Sorry to but in but I recently tuned my stock carb with some trial and error. Everything is fine for me just running a little rich. I have searched a bit but cannot find an average mpg for the hawk. What do most riders consider a good mpg? One other thing is after tuning my carb my hawk starts right up without using the choke at all. |

Update - New CDI/COIL
So splurged and bought a new CDI/COIL and airfilter from TX Powersports. Parts came in last night. Installed both - fired up and seemed to idle much smoother. Took it out it was fine for about the first mile or so. Went right back to sounding very loud, skipping on mid-acceleration and a pop now and then when hard acceleration. I am at a loss, valves - checked, CDI new , Coil - New, Sparkplug new , I have the Keihin PZ60b on, 140 main, 45 idle/1.25 turns out. Needle 3rd postion - maybe I will try second ?? or back to 4th ??
I even tried propane around the carb fittings - no luck. one thing is the exhaust sounds a bit more well 'braappy' as my daughter put it. acts rich on acceleration and almost like a bit lean on low end idle. very weird. I am so frustrated I also said to helll with it send me a new engine for $500 (shipping would kill me though) |

You need to go smaller on the main jet. 140 is way too big. Drop down to a 120 or 115.

I have three carbs, Stock PZ30 Clone, All stock no changes or upgrades - Same behavior VM26 Clone - 115 Main/25 Idle - 4th ring needle position - 1.5-2 turns of the mixture screw. Same behavior just much much worse Keihin PW30b (clone?). 120 Main, 40 or 45 they are not marked so I have to compare to a lower and larger numbered jet that is marked - 3rd Notch/ring on needle, 1.25 turns of the mixture screw (again on the bottom ??) Behavior noted before comes on more slowly but builds as bike heats up. I can’t believe all three would exhibit mostly the same behavior. The VM26 was the worst of the three sputtering and more or less undrivable but at WOT when hot. Like I said before - valves checked 2twice, new coil new CDI, New air filter , box cleaned. Did a leak test around carb/intake. Checked all electrical connections. After suffering through a no spark situation with my KLR I have gotten pretty good at checking every ground, every connector and wire. What is left there must be something I am missing. I have had strange behavior on 2 strokes but different animal and usually it means air intrusion and a holed piston. I do appreciate all the feedback and help. I have a mechanic who works on my snowmobiles and other small engines. I may try him as he has a great deal of experience with small carbs and issues with them. I am tempted to try another $40 Mikuni clone as my mikuni has a pinched floatbowl gasket and it seems I cannot find a replacement. When I put the Keihin back on that was my 18th time of having the carb off and on again. Despite this annoying problem I still love the bike reminds me so much of the XR/XLT Honda’s I had as a kid. |

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F303210680840 Here are a couple of tuning products I sell I suggest tuning the screw to gain best idle n back off 1/8th turn so your mixture then should be right for the pilot jet It’s a screw driver that hooks under the carb Most guys don’t get you need to tune by ear first as well as pull plug I do by ear best idle n little back in |

Or do a voltage check at red/white wire should be about 75v and rev it up till sputters see if changes |

hmmm thinking out loud here..... have you done a compression test? I also remember years ago, we had a short in the kill switch as mentioned above.... without searching above....one member here had a switch on the kickstand that was giving a problem
