There always seems to be a problem whether the top dead center is on the compression stroke or exhaust stroke, if you have the valve cover off when turning over the engine watch for the valve on the carb or fuel injected side to fully compress then turn the engine over slowly until you reach the mark and that will be top dead center compression stroke. This is best done by removing the disc in the middle of the flywheel cover insert a socket and an extension onto the flywheel nut with the spark plug removed and slowly turn it in the direction it would go if you gently push down the kick start lever. Trying to do the whole job with the kick start is difficult with the expect as the flywheel moves too fast and overuns the marks I think due to the cams and valve springs. You can also jack up the back wheel and set into first gear and then slowly move the back wheel slowly in a forward direction

Yeah. That thread was cool. I was looking at those also. I’m wondering if they fit everyone’s valves or not.

I have one of those tools and I don't use it. I find a small adjustable wrench easier lol
