Try to trace where the black wire goes. On most reg/recs a black wire is used as a sense wire. Not all have them as many newer designs are self sensing/regulating. On my goldwing I simply capped the sense wire off on the chassis harness when I upgraded to a newer combined unit.

Looks like you are right, it is a sense wire that is switched with the ignition switch.

Glad to hear it. I have found that blanking the sense wire and upgrading the reg rec makes for much more consistent and stable charge voltage, especially at low rpm.
Did you end up with it in the stock location or try to relocate it at all?

I will be following in your footsteps with this upgrade as well. Honestly, the one thing I don't trust on my Hawk is the electrical side of things. I am sure it's fine, but...

Its a well known swap in the jap bike scene. I need to swap out the older fh011 I have on my vfr for the smaller newer one.
