The KLR is an excellent value and always was. It also seems to hold it's retail value well. As Spud says, it's the vehicle of choice for a trip from BC to Tierra Del Fuego.
If (when?) I get another I would like to take it to the Artic Circle in the Yukon and Alaska.

I have a buddy planning that trip for next summer, and he'll be on his KTM 990.

I couldn't agree more.

Weld, that would be an amazing bike to do that trip on! I am jealous! The one major disadvantage, as I see it, it would be harder to fix and repair far away from civilization. Also, it would be heartbreakingly expensive to fix if it fell. The Kawasaki, not so much.

The KLR650 doesn't have any character until it gets a few scratches. Indeed, the Kaw is relatively inexpensive to repair, and parts should be available practically anywhere in the Western Hemisphere.

Assuming no incidents, I'm betting the extra 340cc would be nice on the highway. I bet the KLR650 is quite buzzy at highway speeds, by comparison.

I have a good friend who is riding his KLR up to Ecuador from Tierra del Fuego now, a lot of miles on his and no mechanical issues at all, I'm on my third one and have never been let down on the road. Power Yamaha in Sublimity, Oregon is selling leftover 2013's for $5795 and they don't charge for setup and shipping, that has to be one of the best values in motorcycling. http://www.poweryamaha.com/default.a...1-0-842361.png

Several years ago Honda East, in Maumee, Ohio (near Toledo) was selling brand new, second generation, KLR650 bikes for $4,000, plus tax. Honda East never adds shipping, dealer prep, or any other bogus charges. I wish I had made the trip back east, and bought one. That is one of the greatest deals I have ever seen.

Indeed! For a long distance bike that wont set you back a fortune and is a lot of fun, it's pretty hard to beat the venerable old KLR .

I've had 4! Sublimity, Oregon is close enough to make 5, but no time or space :-)
Someday though... The ticket is one of the many latest generation models I see for sale with low miles and already modified with skidplates, crash bars, and luggage.

I've only ridden a KLR once. The only real complaint I had was swinging my relatively short leg over the saddle. Maybe a future n+1?
