How would you convince the cop that it's only a 50cc? 8O 8)

That may be the only problem. It depends if there is a speed limit for scooters.
I was thinking that if the plastic says 50cc and vin# that I may slide by. Still researching the actual laws on this. Allen

That idea has been shot down. I will just have to find a big scoot.
Mopeds A moped is any motor driven cycle with an engine not exceeding 50 cubic centimeters (3.05 cubic inches) that can propel the cycle at a speed not to exceed 30 miles per hour (MPH) and does not require clutching or shifting. Mopeds are exempt from the provisions relating to the registration and licensing of motor vehicles. Rules to operate mopeds on Georgia roads and highways: Must be 15 years of age and have in their possession a valid driver’s license, instructional permit or limited permit. Must wear protective headgear (motorcycle helmet). No tag is required. Every person operating a moped upon a roadway must obey the same traffic laws governing drivers of motor vehicles. May not use limited access highways or other roadways where the minimum speed limit is above 35 mph.

I believe it was the Honda Elite 50 that started the scooter craze in the 1980's and they seemed to work fine for around town. The "no endorsement/no insurance" is a nice consideration and if your only going to be driving at downtown speeds I'd think it should work fine.
When I was a kid my parents bought us a couple used 50cc bikes, a 1972 Suzuki TS50 and a 1968 Honda CL50 (both were designed to be street legal). They would do around 30-35mph without problems and the 4-stroke runs forever. FWIW...

The problem is I need to be able to go at least 45 and 50-55 would be better.
I have a motorcycle endorsement, but not having to tag or insure the scooter would be nice. I think I am going to keep my eye out for a 150-400cc scoot. Allen

I have my eye on a ct90 right now too. If the ebay auction works out I will get it and install a 140cc pit bike kit.
It will be easy to register too. Allen

I sort of like THIS but it's not a moped here by michigans definition of a moped but it might be good for your girlfriend but then again it looks so cool you might want it .
I'm sort of looking at a pair of THESE for the wife and I to just putt around on.These also come in a 125cc version. |

there are a couple of 50ccc scooters that are listed to go 45mph. i can not say if that is a real speed, and they cost more$ than other 50cc scooters. see the strada and motorino @ www.scootersus.com . maybe someone who has experience with those machines can jump in and confirm the speed claims.

I found a CT90 without motor for $50. Hoping that will work out to my next project. Allen

When I was a kid the neighbors had a Honda 70 trail that was street legal.
It did 45 mph according to speedo.

50cc big enough??
Here is a tip that will help you on any scooter or bike.
Get on it and ride.. if you have to keep the throttle fully wide open to stay up with traffic.. then its too small for you.. If you cant touch the ground with your feet when the bike is in its full vertical position.. the bike is too big for you.. 2strokes are out there now but wont be for very much longer.. the EPA will see to that so thats not really a good investment.. remember, one of these days you will want to trade it in or sell it.. its future is too uncertain and knowing how the EPA is on 2 strokes to begin with, I wouldnt want to place any bets on how long they will be on US roads.. Good luck with your purchase... Ride Lifan, Ride it with Pride and Ride Safe!! |

The biggest thing your wife is her height. I'm also only 5'0" tall (or short). Anything with more than a 30" seat height would be too tall. I just got an LF250. It has a 27" seat height. I can get both feet on the ground. 30" would put me at tippy-toes on the ground. The LF250 reminds me of a Honda CMT-185 that I had many, many years ago.
Strangely enough, I also own a Forester and got the bike for commuting and saving gas and miles on my Subaru. Plus...it's fun. |
