Shawn the 300cc aircoolled sounds like a winner to me.

Less to break.

The 450 might be the ticket though. Enough power to highway ride.

Another thing these bikes need are larger fuel tanks and a higher output stator for more lighting and abilty to power heated gear. The stator might be an optional thing.

My mods are mostly parts from other bikes are things found at walmart. I have a dr350 tank awaiting fitment for more capacity.

Here is what I would like to see.

400cc with e-start. 6-speed transmission. 520 chain.
Stock USFS approved exhuast.
Better rear suspension.
Higher output stator.
Optional windscreen.
Aluminum wheels.
Better seat.
4-5 gallon tank.

Of course this all cost more money, but would make for a much better around ride.

There has to more, but that is the big things I think could be improved on.

Allen,

i agree 100%. even if they did all of that stuff on a 350cc i think it would be ok. my 200cc was/is a great starter bike whitch is what i bought it for. now i am wanting something more, but can't afford a big 4 jap bike. so i'll have to make due for now. after reading this thread i now have hope.

Katoranger - the 450 Would cost MUCH more since watercooled machines are so expensive to produce for our factory right now. Ill suggest those changes to our technical department. We actually have an aproved exaust that used to come over stamped and ready but they quit using the for some reason ... I need to find out why.

ChiGongJitsu - I would love that also!

Pumpkin - Who did you get your first starter bike from? We have a wonderful dealer up in Wheeling...

Phil_R - I really appreciate the pictures... Ill post a link once everything is up and running...

I think the 300cc aircooled has some promise and still be on the cheap end.

It also keeps the maintenance costs down along with less to break or damage on the trail.

Actually build a bike just like my '07 GY-5, but improve the brakes (no more squeaks please!), widen the seat and make it 600/650cc's and I'd buy one. Leave it a simple OHV, air cooled engine, 5 speed it fine with the right gearing.. price it right and you'd be stealing people from the DR/KLR crowd.
I've let several people ride my bike, it's always a hit but I think the size keeps more experienced riders away.

the air cooled bikes would definitely be easier for us "wrenches" who own these types of bikes...

i second the 600/650cc suggestion, but i'm sure i'd consider buying any enduro bike that american lifan puts out that is over 200cc.

A 600cc is great until you want to take it on tight trails. I think a 300-400cc fits my needs better while giving me enough to take it on the road alittle.

I think that AL needs to market to the smaller bike crowd yet. Less competition in the under 450 dual sport market and that is also the people looking for a less expensive ride.

Nice concept. A 'tard to boot. That's heading in the right direction (just needs to be bigger! )
Heck, build an adventure bike on the LF-400 v-twin, sorta' like the V-Strom, but more dirt oriented with the 21" front and a decent suspension. (Think KTM without the $$$.) Seems like that style of bike is getting popular, I wonder how a low buck entry would fare in the market.
