Reading this thread with great interest and unfortunately am a little paranoid now. Can anyone else chime in and let me know if this is normal? My bike when it is in neutral and the clutch is out makes a knocking noise and is noticeably louder. When I pull the clutch in, or when the bike is in gear, the noise goes away. Obviously I understand a little noise is normal when bikes are in neutral but my RX-3 seems to be the loudest I've noticed. If it is too loud it seems it would be related to these needle bearings 4rvid ordered.

The 25x29x13 needle bearing does not fit to the hole of Ajp clutch basket.
But it fits nice to sleeve. When I compare my clutch basket to picture found in Riceburners topic I see there is a difference. On AJP there is a small bevel (0.5mm) on the edge of the hole on clutch basket. Its shown on the picture below. Tomorrow I'm going to machine hole the from 28mm to 29mm and then needle bearing should fit nicely. |

Thanks for posting the update.
I wonder if the clutch baskets are different, or if Riceburner ordered the wrong size bearings?

Arvid, Use a file to scratch where you want to machine in the bore and see how hard it is. If file can dig in and scratch it you should be OK. If it can't is probably pretty hard I'm guessing and will be a real pain to machine out. Maybe need to be ground out? I think in this application it would be VERY hard. rj

It will need to be hardened as it will be the outer surface for the bearing. Bit strange to be making two different clutch baskets for the same engine?

Can you find size 25x28x13 bearings?

Well folks, my clutch DOES NOT have a bronze sleeve. Mine looks just like the pictures Spud posted in the clutch thread. Two needle bearings and the Steele sleeve. I have not gone back to my original post of my engine problem that ended up being the clutch bearings but the dimensions I posted there match my clutch.

I took my OEM bearing to the Bearing Supply Shop and had them match it up. I also ordered a set from CSC before I knew of the Bearing Supply shop so now I have a back up on hand.

taking 0.5mm out you are going to go though the harding... WILL need to be re-harded... or yer problums are going to get a lot bigger... Need a ground surface , not machined on a lathe....even ceramic inserts won't give a surface suitable for a needle race to run on... To harden the boss the bassket will need to be taken apart as there is cushining rubbers or springs in there that you can not get hot in the hardening process... ..

Unless you buy an RX3 clutch basket I think you will just have to replace the bronze bush.
Your steel sleeve looks unmarked so any wear has to be on the bush itself even though any wear is not obvious from your photo. This bearing/bush only sees any real action when you are in gear, stopped with the clutch lever pulled and engine running. Do you do a lot of city driving? Sitting in gear at traffic lights in gear with clutch pulled? |
