At least try to sell it online only for beer money and some chump like me will drag it away for you. if it still runs and cuts you might get a case of beer.

deja vu

So I was doing the ol' searching the online listings on gumtree/marketplace/craigslst etc....

Err yeah rinse and repeat.

Well I found This Australian Made Greenfield ride on lawn mower...and well it was 30 min away...and it apparently ran...

this time though it was $175 dollarydoos....Now I will say Greenfield mowers in Australia hold value.

But if you look there is far less rust a seat, 4 tires in much better condition.
And the cherry a 12hp flathead briggs with all the bells still attached...

Now "what are you going to do with 2 clapped out mowers" I hear you say...Or more likely "those Australians are crazy"...etc.

Ok The Bolens yard kart is still a thing...but to get all the parts separate new like pullies, spindles, tires, rims yadda yadda yadda well it would cost more than $200AU. set front tire were look to be about $80 from ebay...

So I went look for another mower...and well this happened...

Now you might be saying but XLsior....why not just make the Greenfield a yard cart....

Well with all the parts for the Bolens removed from the Greenfield what I have left is panels and a chassis....Now you might not be aware, but Racing Mowers are a thing (quite possibly the cheapest form of motorsport there is and just as compelling in many respects)....and here in Aus there are rules and regulations for classification bracket homologation requirements...I doubt the Bolens would get a pass but the Australian made Greenfield is a shoe in.

basically all the parts removed will have to go anyway.

"But what about the engine for the Greenfield" you might be asking next....And to that I say...I have some ideas relevant to this forum

Serial Number For the Briggs Nerds

This 12hp Briggs actually still has stamped numbers. looks to be period correct for the Bolens too. 84?

From what Ive found is same bore as the 11hp but a longer stroke and also iron sleeved.

Another thing i found is people swap the 11hp head onto the 12hp for better compression...

Basically the 11hp engine is now a parts/spares unit.

12hp had a champion spark plug pulled it out and it was caked with oily black...then ther terminal snapped off...
took the NGK plug out of the 11hp looked dry...cranked the 12 and healthy spark...threw some 2stroke down its throat, boosted it with the 12v juice and she licked off then died...think I'm cleaning another carby.

NGK wins...

Put some fuel in the tank fired it up and did a quick drive and cut test....all operational but it's bit on the sketchy toe cutting side of things.
However it just made a lot of surplus parts higher value... ..

Engine seems healthy. drained hot oil, black but not bad.
Fresh oil in.

Briggs nerd here. Built on the 22nd day of August, 1988. Last two digits of the CODE are the factory. I don't have my book with me but I am going to guess Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I can double check that when I get home tonight.

Mower racing is a thing here, too. My SIL sent me some video of the Unlimited Class mower drag races. Basically Hyabusa powered Toros.

Australian mower racing is still fairly new here. There are established official clubs 1 not too far from me.

Most of the mower racing content on YT is American, Different set of classification brackets but the principle is the same.

Its cheap competitive thrills and spills pretty much done around the world.

Somebody might find this interesting

So why The Greenfield for racing...

There's a number of reasons.

They are built like a tank this is not flimsy mild steel...So having a bomb proof foundation is a good start.

Next is that (I think though I may be wrong) Greenfield's use a patent twin friction disc/pulley "transmission" system where the drive belt does a loopdeeloop and the single foot control pushed forwards or back shifts side pressure and engaged either pulley giving forwards or reverse....This is interesting but not actually important...All that stuff is going away.

What is important is that the twin friction pulleys are connected to a jack shaft that drives a a sprocket and chain system direct to the rear axle.. As you might be able to see in the photo

Most mowers don't do this, usually its a trans box with a drive belt slip clutch...

So this chassis is built tuff and can accommodate jack shafts and chain drives...
Now jack shafts, sprockets and chains, open up a whole lot more options for engines...Catch my drift

Not saying I couldn't or that it hasn't already been done...

But That would put it in "outlaw" class bracket...I don't think I'd even be allowed to use it without 1 years racing experience.

I'm thinking Cheap 200cc maybe 250cc racing brackets...in more of a junked Chinese dirt bike type of aircooled power plant.

Anyway before I get to side tracked and derailed by racing mower victories and glory..

The Bolens yardcart/buggy is the main topic of this particular thread.

I will be removing both engines gving the 12hp some spit and polish.

And basically getting all the parts dismantled and serviced before any assembly happens.

Less Peerless Ness

So tearing down the Bolens and the transmission is unusable.

Busted leg exposing internals. and the brass bushings are whacked.

So with that being the case or lack of case depending on how you look at it...

Using a vertical engine is likely out...Making a 90 transfer box with pulleys and sprockets is possible but somewhat defeats the hobbled cheapskate approach.

Another possible option is a $200 6.5/7hp horzontal shaft 210cc ebay clone...I suppose our version of the USA predator 212. slap a centrifugal clutch and some sprockets...

Still defeats the hobbled together cheapskate approach...

So I'll part out the peerless 700...try and cover my fuel and $11...
Store both the Brigss&Stratton flatheads in case my 17hp Tecumseh on the Murray mower shits the bed.

Sell the Greenfield superficials like drive and deck assemblies.

And as for whats left of the Bolens...think I'll cut my intentions short weld on a draw bar and make a different kind yard cart...The tow a trailer behind a mower kind.
