I have about a 15 year old Husky 345 18"er that's been through hell and back and you're right, it SCREAMS...and still runs as good as the day I bought it.
The new ones (at least here in CA) have unadjustable carbs. First thing to go on Ebay and replace.

Yeah mine was on the lean side. The small time local dealer told me that when I bought it. He said they all need an adjustment right out the box. After I paid for it he took it out of the box and took it to the back and adjusted everything. He gave it to me and I've been running it ever since. They sell both Stihl and Husky. Its nice to have a knowledgeable dealer like that.

I have one of the 15+ year old Poulan's and it has performed flawlessly. I guess they don't make them like they use to. A few years back I was helping my neighbor cut up some trees he cut down. He was using his old 24" Home Lite and it kept overheating so I broke out my little $99.00 16" Poulan. He laugh and said your going to burn that little thing up. But when I started up and started cutting he changed his mind. The only time it stopped was when it ran out of gas and chain oil. When we took a break he ran out to Lowe and picked him one up and retired to old Home Lite. It can sit on the shelf for months and will crank right up. All I have done to it was replace the Bar and chain after one of my nephews borrowed it and didn't put any chain oil. He brought back the chainsaw and an almost full gallon of oil that I gave him to put in it. Needless to say he never asked to borrow any of my tools after that.

Like letsride, I have a very knowledgeable local saw shop that sells both Husky and Stihl. He doesn't carry any of their line that you can buy at Lowes. All more the commercial and top end stuff. He told me that while some of the Husky stuff (lower end weedeaters, etc...) may not be what they once were, there's still the top end of the line that he carries that still has the Swedish motors and hardware....but like I mentioned earlier, here, everything's sealed up on all equipment to pass CARB.

hmm, Ya'll have got me thinking. I think I will take my saw into lowes and see if I can compare it to one they have. How could they make a saw totally different? My saw was like 349 bucks at my local dealer if I recall. Anyway, the thing saws down trees reliably so I'm happy. I've owned a few pooplans and they are just terrible. Replaced the carbs on them and they still weren't worth a crap. My OLD craftsman IS a poulan, but has metal covers, etc. Its heavy but very powerful.

I have an old Poulan and for a small saw it has lots of power. very little plastic on it. Like I said, they don't make the like they use to.

Plastic holds the world together now LOL. My Dad has an old metal Husqvarna Bow Saw. That thing is the cats meow for cutting up firewood. But truth be told it scares the bejesus outta me. No guards except the one you rest on the log and no fancy breaks. The motor has to be 80cc I guess its a monster.

correction: its a 65cc. Had to call the ole man to verify.

I guess "any of their line you can buy at Lowes" was a bit broad brushing. I was discussing more the small weedeaters and that. My local Lowes does carry the 4 series. They're supposed to be good saws.

TSC also carries Jonsered and they look exactly like the Husky's, but red. Even the little electronic parts say "Husqvarna" on them.

Stihl MS180 - can mod with an adjustable carb and open up the muffler to increase horsepower. Will run a thin 16" bar with no problem. I have this and a 291 for heavier work.

The 251 is twice the saw though. I'd buy that one.

My buddy's wife just got him a Poulan Pro 20"er for his birthday and he brought it up last weekend to do some cutting to try it out. Ran fine. He doesn't cut a lot so it should do fine for him.
