I can't help but wonder if a conventional oil pump could be fitted, and run off of the gear instead of a chain.

Because they moved the oil pump down lower, farther away from the crankshaft, there is no room at the bottom of the crankcase for a larger gear on the pump since the diameter would have to be larger.
