Thanks FlashlightBoy. I placed my order (by the way, my carb says taotao right on it) with EagleAtvParts. I checked my CC - lo & behold the charge is from TaoTao. Screwy. It should be in my hands in a couple of days.
The PO definitely had the chain too tight. |

A new chain is cheap insurance. I usually buy RK from either Bike Bandit or Rocky Mountain ATVMC, whomever is the cheapest.

Well, the sent me the new design (the one with the box stock) instead of the tubular. Doesn't fit. It is shorter, smaller shock mount, and the pivot is shorter. Called them up and apparently the website pictures don't match. I have to call them today, as they have to pull a "pallet of the old stuff people don't order much of." At least there is hope.
My daughter was a bit disappointed, but that is a life lesson for her. |

Can you weld (or have welded) the original swingarm in the meantime?

They refunded the charge as they couldn't find the correct swingarm in their pallet of 'old' parts. Funny that, Mother Honda still stocks parts for motorcycles built in 1994 (getting harder to find), and I can still get NEW stock for my 2000 Honda VFR, but a chinese ATV that is 7 years old, not so much.
They did tell me to keep the 'new' swingarm. My friend welded up the original, and if that fails we will break out his plasma cutter and graft the ears/tangs from the new design onto the old swing arm. The new one is a little thicker plate metal. So, tomorrow night I'll put it all back together and see what happens... Thanks for the help folks! |

So far, so good. New carb is working well, swing arm is holding up.
I think I have to take the clutch apart and sand it. My eldest tried going through some tall grass up a hill and it just wouldn't go, I could smell the clutch burning up. |

Since it is an oil bath clutch, I would suspect that either the wrong oil has been used in the past, or the springs are weak. What type of oil are you using now?

Isn't it a centripital dry clutch? This has only 'one' gear (forward, no shift, just throttle and go).

Not sure if it's centrifugal or centripetal, but I'm pretty sure it's wet. Pop the cover off to be sure.

clutch
Yes if the clutch is on the same side as you add oil... it is wet... and as Weld says... if it is wet the oil has to be the right oil and change it as otherwise it will burn up with old oil... I sell lots because people do not change their oil... and think they need 10-30... wrong...

I changed the oil about 2 hours of use before my eldest got on it. I used M1 10-40 for older engines (no friction modifiers, i.e. it doesn't have the energy conserving seal). It is the same oil I use on my 2000 Honda VFR, I've been using M1 for about 15000 miles on my VFR without a hiccup. I'll put it on the lift soon and take a look.

I'm certain that you used the correct oil, but there's no guarantee about the previous owner. The clutch might still be slippery from 10W30 or similar.
I've never tried it, but I bet you could clean the existing clutch with something like Varsol.
