why is the KPX250 75 pounds heavier than a Templar X?

Hello all. I am currently awaiting my Templar X. It's in layaway and I should have it and on the road, by the end of March, if not before. If this weight thing isn't resolved by then, I will weigh mine with a full tank at an aggregate or truckstop and let you all know. Also, it's supposed to have a large heavy frame, so I hope the 441 pound capacity is true. I would hate to bend the frame in half while just sitting on it (6' 304 lbs).

Okay, I got around to rolling my KPX250 onto my digital bathroom scale.

Full tank of gas, bar risers, tailpack, 2lb lighter rear tire, tires balanced:

Rear 183 lbs.
Front 153 lbs.
Total 336 lbs.

I'd say the 333 lb. weight Lifan claims is pretty damn accurate.

I'm very curious to know what a Templar X actually weighs with a full tank of gas... for that matter the Japanese competitors as well... stated weights are often quite optimistic...

Plenty of people with a templar, but it seems not so many that own a bathroom scale. They spent all their money on their Templars.

For instance, the $9,000 - $13,000 cross-country aluminum-frame bikes (e.g. Yamaha WR250, KTM 250 cc - 350 cc family) seem to weigh 245 - 255 pounds; the ~$6,000 entry-level, steel-frame dual-sports (e.g. Kawasaki KLX300, Honda CRF 300L et al ) weigh maybe 305 - 310 pounds (of course that includes the street gear).


So, for an extra ~$3,000 - $6,000, compared to the entry-level dual sports, one gets ~60 pounds less weight, adjustable suspension (maybe $2,000 if one DiY's it) and a high-compression (short service-interval) engine. Compared to the ~$2,000 Templar X, those incremental costs might be more like ~$7,000 - $11,000.

I borrowed my wife's Pro Iron digital scale (sshhhh!).

Topped off the tanks and weighed the front, then rear multiple times. Got pretty reproduceible weights, within 0.1 lb on repeats

EDIT: I noticed that the garage is slanted towards the drain where I did the weighing. I weighed them again on a flat surface, and used a board the same thickness as the scale on the other tire to keep it more level. The weights went up a little:
Results:

Templar X (5 speed),
134F + 154R = 288lbs

The Templar is all stock but with a 51T rear sprocket and Tusk DSport Adventure tire (heavy sucker). Also Michelin air stop 4mm thick inner tubes front and rear.

KTM motocross 2 stroke (liquid cooled),
112F + 117R = 229lbs

The KTM has a 2 gallon tank (enough for one heat), and it has been converted to street legal with Polysport headlight, mirrors, left handlebar controls for turn signals, Hi/Lo beam, horn button, extra switch for headlights, Warp 9 kickstand, tail light assembly, one inline brakelight switch (pneumatic). All of this couldn't weigh even 5 lbs, I think.

I just went out and weighed my '23 Titan DLX. It is the same exact bike at the Templar M, except with the 223cc engine instead of the 249cc. 127lbs front, 132lbs rear = 259lbs total. That's with 3/4 tank of fuel.

Now to ruin everybodies results, except the full size scale used by K'hermitt. Did you guys make sure to elevate the non-scaled wheel to the same height as the scaled wheel? If no, the weights you got will be a bit off as the elevating of the wheel being weighed will slightly shift way from that wheel as it is raised higher than the one still on the ground.

We aren't talking a lot, but even if it was 5-10lbs it still skews the results. I guess on the plus side, that makes the results no worse than said full size scale weight.

I would say 280lbs is a fair wet weight for the Templars, give or take a few.

Just to make Megadan happy I did this with and without the unweighed wheel at the same height as the wheel I was weighing. Only saw 0.2 -0.4 lb difference.

Perhaps the net weight is including the crate and packaging materials it is shipped in. Just my guess.

Just for fun I weighed my killer. 192 front and 264 rear. total of 456. Crash bars front and rear and a trunk bag with junk in it.

1. No one is addressing the elephant in the room, except K'hermitt, which is that the discrepancy in weights is probably down to the spec sheet being either hopelessly optimistic or an outright lie. These are Chinese made bikes, brought to you by the country who will happily sell you plastic pellets instead of rice, and claim that you just bought a "10 million lumen" flashlight that runs off of 2xAA's. It's horseshit, folks. Lying about the specifications of everything is the Chinese national sport.


Guessing about it is the one thing that's guaranteed not to produce the correct answer.



2. To accurately weigh a bike using a bathroom scale, without having to lift either end of it and give yourself a hernia, weigh it twice. Once with the front wheel on the scale, once with the rear wheel on the scale. The sum of these two numbers will be the correct weight. Sport Rider got it right.


Post script: I rode my fully loaded KLR up and down the MABDR over the last couple of days. I dumped it and had to pick it up four (4) times. Once time I wiped out in gravel, once in mud, once after a river crossing, and once my kickstand sunk into the dirt. I was not best pleased about it by the 4th time, but I managed by myself.
