It has been my experience (and I can only speak for myself), that with 2 strokes, a hard break-in works fine. Hardly any moving parts.

Four strokes on the other hand, develop far more friction, heat and have "hot spots" because of far more moving parts that need to wear in and surfaces that need mate with each other like cam lobes, lifters, rockers, cam bearings, etc...so I've always broke in my 4 strokes as recommended by the manufacturer.

That said, it's like oil threads, everyone should do what they think is best for their own bikes.

Yes, the big difference between then and now is that pretty much everything was 2 stroke back then. Good catch!!

I remember a few years back we had a member here who bought a brand new Qlink from my dealer in Sac, ran the thing hard and wide open out of the box and a week later, I saw it in my dealers shop with a grenaged motor on the bench because the cam bearing seized at redline. It was a mess. The guy actually blew it up twice and my dealer said "no more" on the warranty repairs.

The two four stroke thing is very true ,but we are still doing it with brand new mx bikes today ,which have very complicated and expensive valvetrains and it's actually very very rare that we have an engine failure that's not related to a lazy or uninformed owner not taking care of the valve maintainance .The valve train only runs at half engine speed anyway .The two smokers also revved much much higher than the four strokes .

I'm sorry but I'm not gonna take a bike out of a box that is known to have TIGHT valves, crappy oil, and a LEAN air fuel mix and run it like that. Ski didn't know any better amd I'm sure his bike is ok. Wonder if Spud Rider broke in his 50 THOUSAND MILE CG like a mad man. Something tells me he didn't

He did change the oil before he cranked it. I've been helping him with the assembly. I spoke with him this morning. He's got the idle down some but was still idling fast. He had the idle screw just about all the way out and was still idling fast. I Had him check and adjust the throttle cable and check for cable binding. I think that may have been the problem because he couldn't get it to start more than likely because the idle is set to low now. He had to run out for a while today and he will work on it later today. One thing I have to say about Ski is the reason it took a while to put together is because he took his time to put it together to make sure everything was correct. We have to remember he and Enforcer were the 1st to assemble one of these and had no instruction or threads on here to go by. He has done a great job at putting this bike together. Okay enough of me.
Letsride, did you get yours ordered yet? The enforcer has your name all over it.

Nobody has even once said that's what he should of done .The whole entire time they waited for the bikes to ride ,someone was telling them to adjust the valves ,change the the oil ,and get the jetting right .Those are things that I used to do in the 70's at the Honda ,Kawasaki ,Can am ,Maico ,Ktm dealer ,I am certain to some extent they are still doing it the same today .Just because these China bikes don't come from "real dealerships " with a service department to properly set up a bike( yes there are a few good ones but most are just resellers ) ,doesn't mean that the work isn't required .Guaranteed ,on a new $10,000.00 mx bike ,the dealership has gone through and made the proper adjustments .

Awesome...and now you can ride it a little, and then change the oil and check the valve adjustment again in a few hundred miles. When it warms up a little anyways! These are all good lessons you'll never forget!

He said it was better to run them extra hard at first to break them in correctly. These motors are tough. And you had good oil in it! Everything will be fine!
That works better for two strokes than four strokes. I will tell you how I broke in a new piston on my BSA Gold Star flat tracker. I put one drop of oil on each side of the piston, swished it around to distribute the oil better, buttoned the engine back up, started it up and ran it at 7000 rpm for one minute, then shut it off. Pulled it back down and the rings and piston looked great. Rider got on it and went ripping up and down Ventura Blvd for one trip. I asked him if it ran OK. His answer: "Goes down the road like an old toad" If I've got to translate that for you, you'll never be a race tuner. BUT, I wasn't expecting to run that engine for 50,000 miles without laying a wrench on it!!!...ARH
