I have a box full of those. I built and repaired PC's starting back in the mid 80's. I thought of using them but wanted something that would be waterproof. I have a couple automotive type somewhere in my shed but If I can't find them I may try those out. Hell I probably have about 2 dozen of them.

Waterproof would be essential if they may get wet but mine should stay dry. I'm more concerned about them melting with 300 degree oil 1/2" away.

SPAL makes a little 4 inch fan that moves a ton of air. It's a puller style fan only, so it would need to be on the back side of the cooler, but it's a great fan built by a reliable high quality brand. I used one before and never had an issue with it. Only a 1.9 Amp constant with a 4 amp peak power draw as well.
Obviously, the only downside is that it costs as much as the oil cooler kits themselves, but it is waterproof, dustproof, and will be realiable. http://www.jegs.com/i/SPAL/063/30103...ySTBoCpMvw_wcB

However, the clutch - as has been written about here in a few cases - is very sensitive to temperature. My clutch lever developed slack as the plates expanded(I have it adjusted on the tight side anyway) and neutral was difficult if not impossible to get. After a stretch running at 50mph in clear air it all tightened again. I suspect the plate and fibre components (cheap as they are, I have a spare set) have a lot of expansion in them. I'm considering an oil cooler for this reason alone, it's just common enough to be annoying. From experience it becomes an issue running in weather above 70F. On a regular back-road bash on the weekend you wouldn't even notice it, but if you go offroad having put some heat in the clutch pack, you'll notice it dragging, clattering and engaging with a jolt. It's a real shame there aren't some good aftermarket kits as it's the only thing on the bike I'd spend some top dollar on to sort out. |

Found an easy way to mount the cooler on the Rhino by attaching it to one of the fender supports. Didn't even need to trim the hoses. I arranged it so the fans are in the back, blowing the hot air outward so as not to direct it toward the cylinder head. Figured the cooler didn't need to face into the wind since the only time it's really needed is when going slow when little to no air flows through it anyway. I put a toggle switch next to the ignition switch to turn it on or off but may yet use a thermal switch.
It looks in the pic that it's supported by the plastic tab but there is a steel support behind the plastic. |

You need the fan sucking in cool air across the fins. Having warm air blow on the engine isnt gonna do anything negative. Cooler oil is way more helpful than a couple degrees of cool air blowing on an engine. Plus fans work better as pullers and not pushers.

I agree the fans would work better sucking the air through the radiator but I have doubts about the plastic standing up to the high temps.

Any updates on the oil coolers? Since I've posted a youtube video I have had quiet a few people contact me on where they can buy in the USA. I've given them your contact info. Most of them just don't want to deal with buying from China.

Still no bueno. Best i can do is $115 shipped for the one that hooks to the screen plug on the bottom of the engine with a stacked plate cooler. Honestly haven't had the funds to pursue an order and MOQ is 50 units. Just found out the fireplace i was going to put an insert in to reduce my $2,000 a winter propane bill is not going to be safe for an insert due to MFG defects, (fireplace MFG was sued out of business) so now i'm 4K into a new airtight fireplace. Granted my wood is free but still a 3-4 year payback. |
