Great thread and a real eye opener on what to expect with the TT250! Like stated earlier some of this may put a potential TT250 owner off the idea of buying the bike but once you get all the little bugs worked out it looks like it will be a great bike! Now did i read that right where it is mentioned that the rear sprocket is originally for a Honda XL185? Between that info and the mention of the Unibear chain it is giving me ideas for my XL to get it running cheap!

The JTR269 sprocket is for the XL185 from what I hear. I can tell you this too, after running this Unibear chain for a while now, it has yet to really stretch, which is amazing for a brand new chain and it's still running super quiet. So far, worth every penny.

That's right. Just like engines don't "Break in", they wear in. Also the parts bed in. And most of the wear in occurs in the first 250 miles. Same way with chains. A pre-stretched chain is one that is worn in and bedded in under factory conditions. So you don't have to do it. I don't remember how long Brough-Superior broke in the JAP V-Twins, but it was at least a hundred miles. Ariel broke in their engines for four hours on a dyno. But these were premium motorcycles, and the price reflected that. The Hawk is not a premium motorcycle, and the price also reflects that. Today's motorcycles are machined to much closer tolerances than the older ones were. So they need much less running in than the old ones. But they still need some running in. No longer need 1000 miles. Probably 90% of the running in is done in the first 100 miles on today's bikes.

I did do a parts number search based off of the JT sprocket number and it does in fact list an application for the XL185 in the 49 T version of it. So now that i have that number on hand it will be far easier to order the parts for my XL. As for the unibear chain where do i find that?

i got a unibear for my hawk. damned inexpensive but pretty darn stout so far. frankly I am impressed at the bang per buck value of the thing.

Also don't forget the chain breaker. I still had a Motion Pro chain breaker that I bought a time ago. They still look the same because a chain is still a chain. You can find cheaper ones but that is what I have.

I do not know a lot about these motors but I know in my small pit bikes and other style motors they do not like synthetic oils. The motors are designed to run on non synthetic oils. Can some on else chime in on this? THanks

I'm curious about this. In what way did they adversly respond to synthetic oils? The Hawk engine seems to thrive on synthetic oil, by all reports. Could be because a very small amount of oil is cooling and lubricating a larger engine. A dual-sport run on the highway gets pretty hot, running at or near redline all the while.

MadMonkey, What problems have you had running synthetic oil in pit bike engines? I've used the synthetic Rotella T6 in my CG engines as well as the little 110 and 140 horizontal (pit bike) engines with no issues. Switched back to non synthetic because I'm cheap.

I'm still confused on what everyone's problem with Synthetic Oil is... oil and technology has come a long way since Amsoil first introduced Synthetic Oils to America... is everyone still stuck in the "1970's Technology/Synthetic Oil is evil Myths" ??
My China Bike has had Synthetic Oil from day one... it's usually been Rotella T6 5w40 Synthetic the entire time (one time I used Castrol 20w50 synthetic)... it now has over 1,500 miles and gets anywhere from 54 - 109 miles per gallon depending on how I ride the bike... the little Bashan can cruise at Interstate speeds (70 - 75 miles per hour) for several hours straight (rode I-25 going 70+ for over 2 hours)... no overheating, not a drop less of oil in the engine, and no "synthetic oil in my China Bike Issues"... Compression hasn't changed... piston and ring is good... valves haven't magically disappeared due to the "synthetic oil in the engine"... Sooo.... Can we seriously stop spreading the "Synthetic Oils are evil and will destroy your China Bikes Engine"... you won't ruin your "break in procedure" using a Synthetic Oil... if anything it should make the break in period of the engine work better... Some food for thought... Almost every Automotive made by the big names in the last 10 - 15 or so years have some kind of Synthetic Oil in the engine/transmission from the factory... all for "better break in purposes"...

I run synthetic in everything with no problems.....other than cost. Then there's Spud and Weld who run 15W-40 diesel oil and have had great results also. I've bounced between them if the synthetic I like isn't available.
