Pictures. The engine is now bolted into place.
Man, 3/8" riv-nuts are hard work for an old guy to install. Then, only 3 of the 4 holes lined up. And it was so close. I cut one of the tack welds on the cross member giving me the headache and gave it a couple of whacks to line up the hole, ran in the bolts, and re-tacked it in place. As you can see, the tank is sitting on the rocker cover. I'll need to reposition that now but that can wait. Back on the road tomorrow, so next weekends plans, besides grandson Eli's birthday party, are to pull the wheels, triple tree, and engine. Then take the frame outside to weld it up. Maybe.

Now that looks like progress.

You probably have vastly more knowledge on this than me, but are rivnuts a good choice for mounting an engine? I dont recall ever seeing anything structural/vibration prone typically being mounted with a rivnut...
That said i have a real nice rivnut gun that doesnt get near enough use....LOL |

This thing is so gloriously rednecky I don’t think any real concerns need to be met…
You might want to install your welder and a generator as a permanent fixture on the back tho, for the moments the vibrations start cracking it apart…. Plus, it would look cool The green (KX?) tank cracks me up every time I see it. I keep making myself laugh, sorry Cheesy, but, I really hope the Chinese don’t get ahold of this and start making inferior copies… Diesel Shineray Dovewing Endura Flat Track Raceresque by Cheesy with optional onboard welder and KX gas containing capabilities

In the fog of war, plans fcuking change. (Dermot Crowley in The Foreigner)
Not touching it this weekend. Freaking cold today and I have Eli's birthday party this afternoon. Nicer tomorrow and I have to replace the second wiper linkage in the Chevy in less than a year. Says something when the wiper linkage in the 74 year old DeSoto is original and the 13 year old Chevy is getting it's third one.

Dodged another bullet on the Chevy. One of the wiper arm nuts worked loose. Just wish I'd checked that before I backed everything out of the barn and dragged the Chevy in. Kind of thought my son in law, who borrowed the truck and told me about it, would have checked, too, before he bought the new linkage.
Done for the day.

I do see it as being different as the metal that is doing the actual holding is much more maleable than a normal nut would be, in addition to that, the threaded portions OD is the same size as the hole, and relying soley on the mechanical strength of the maleable part that squishes to hold it in... but, i am not an engineer so ....LOL

No, i have not... i just have seen far too many rivnut applications overused and worn thru as a mechanic the last 7 years.... cheaper small engine brands like using them because any monkey can run a rivnut in a hole, where as a weld nut actually requires half a brain....

Man, I wish it would either warm up or I could be home for the weekend. The weather over the last few weekends have not been conducive to getting outside to do the needed welding. In other words, Brrr and Ick.
This Saturday has me carting Eli around for his TKD tournament and Sunday has me in Chicago for several hours helping a buddy rearrange his bicycle shop. At least he's comping me in parts.

Well, hell. One step forward, two steps back. Started welding today with the little Lincoln 100 I got from my sister via our Dad. The first five welds made me look like a pro. And it went downhill from there.
Good welds became intermittent, burned holes in the tubes, had hanging grapes, and I didn't change a damn thing I was doing from the first five welds. I traced the problems back to the Lincoln 100. The .035 contact tip was shot for one and Dad had an old roll of HF .030 wire in the machine. Like some time from the 90s old. None of the contact tips I have will fit the Lincoln torch, so I need to order some. I have a couple sealed rolls of Lincoln flux core wire. I shall turn the old roll towards the trash can.
