I like the oil reservoir idea.
Tim? Are we going to have to look for a trike for you? You can't be doing those kind of stunts anymore. You might break a hip. I'm assuming you came out alright? Sounds like the bike took the beating.

In theory the reservoir idea wouldn't be too difficult. The return line from the cooler routed to a small tank and then the outlet return to the pump. It would need to be able to stand being pressurized, and I would definitely want to run a check valve on the feed to the tank in question. A small power steering reservoir might fit the bill.

The reservoir idea is intriguing, Tim; I hadn't considered that before.

Would there be any benefits for having extra oil complicity? I like the ones you referred us to Pete.

Those are actually catch cans . The inlet or outlet does not have any kind of tubing going to the bottom of the can. The catch can is designed to trap oil and water and not circulate it. But with a little creativity I'm sure I could figure out how to make it work. Extra oil capacity will help in oil cooling and longevity between oil changes.
You could probably use the ports were the sight tube connects and use those as the inlet and outlet ports.

The one thing about the way these sump style oil coolers work that makes this a possibility is that they are a negative pressure style system. Per the manufacturer of said system:

" Many people ask how the oil is circulated. Simply put, the adapter has two holes. The oil from the oil sump flows out of one of the holes, and the other hole is connected to the oil pump inlet. When the engine is running, the oil is drawn in. The oil pump reaches the various parts of the machine after being pressurized.
Path: High-temperature oil at the bottom of the box—external filter—oil radiator heats off the oil—The engine oil pump pressurizes and supplies the cooled oil to all parts of the engine. The whole system is a negative pressure cycle."

The oil is actually drawn through the cooler lines and cooler by the oil pump, which in this case means adding an extra tank would be doable.

The catch is, the extra oil capacity would need to be stored with the mass of the oil below the pickup location at the motor, otherwise it will flood the crankcase and never truly store the oil. This is known as a semi dry sump system. That means this extra tank of oil would have to basically sit lower than the engine.

Then there is the potential for sloshing and aeration of the oil, or the oil moving away from the pickup point, which on a motorcycle that leans is a very real possibility. That is why there have been very few bikes that have run this type of system. Most favoring wet or dry sump due to them being less complicated and a lower potential for problems.

I could see it potentially working if the tank was a completely sealed part of the system and completely filled with oil (aka, just like the oil cooler). There would be no easy way to service it. In that case, those catch cans that pete linked might work by having the return from the cooler enter with a tube going down into the can toward the bottom and the return drawing directly from the top (or vice versa). Either way, like I said before, it would have to be completely filled with oil in order to work, but having the fittings at the top of the tank would at least prevent drain back.
