Got the 40 tooth sprocket installed. Please forgive the audio. My new GoPro 7 has a known issue with the audio at higher speeds. Don't buy a GoPro. Anyway, my top speed is kind of disappointing. The bike is a lot more fun and responsive with the new engine but it realistically doesn't go any faster than the stock CG engine. Is the swap worth the time and money? I'll say maybe. It's definitely cool. With some more work and proper engine break in maybe in the spring I'll have better results. I still think I was lean, due to the 35' weather I was riding in. I did change out the 110 main jet to a 115, which helped a little. This thing still needs a few more horses to push me up to the 70mph mark. Thoughts are always welcome.

What you posted, is one the reasons why i gave up on a Motorcycle that is equipped with the RE250, the max speed was barely higher than a CG.
I think if we want something that's actually faster than the CG230 we need to move to a chinese 250 DOHC setup. About the GoPro i didn't knew they were having issues with speed and audio. I guess i will keep my hero 5 black for a bit longer. |

The other appeal is the OHC engine has better hop-up potential if you decide to try and get a bit more power out of it. In the end though, the basic reality is that it is still a 230cc-ish air cooled single. I would do the same mods I did to my CG to said CB clones - ported head, increased compression, and a larger smooth bore carb. The RE can take advantage of the better breathing up top than even the CG without a cam. Toss in the possibility of cam changes and the CB again has the advantage of using two lobes vs. the CG engine's single lobe. For what it is worth, even if you don't want to do any actual engine mods, I would highly suggest a PE30 or PWK30 carburetor paired to that engine. The difference might amaze you. Also, as Jerry said, give it time to break in before you judge it too much. Many people complain about the lack of power on the Hawk's when they are new, and by 500 miles their opinion tends to change as the motor has finally seated the rings and "loosens up" a bit.

I’ve had several CG bikes from a 150 to a 300 and the difference in power is negotiable. The OHC engines rev higher and produce a little more HP but again not much of a difference in top speed runs. 70mph seems to be the goal and the limit of these Chinese engines.

It's all about how far you're willing to go. I'm quite sure the RE can be made to produce alot more power than the CG, but it's gonna cost alot more than the initial price of the motor. In '95 I doubled the hp of a YSR 50 from 6.9 to 14.1 averaged from 3 consecutive dyno runs, it came apart on the 3rd run deceleration due to reusing piston clips, but at the track it's only gotta last 3 runs. Back to the RE, I wouldn't be surprised if 25hp was possible WITH enough work and money.

I had higher hopes too. Honestly the power is good and it is much better than the stock CG throughout the RPMs, it just isn't enough. It's hard to explain.
