I remember getting into a similar discussion on here once before. I had said that i had always not screwed it in to check. Then i noticed my lawnmower manual on my desk and looked to see what it said and it said to screw it in.

I guess there is no definitive answer that will work every time. A time for "Your milage may vary" type of disclaimer. I do thick however that as long as you keep the level very close to the upper hash mark on the dip stick, you will be fine regardless of the method used to check the oil.
