Even if your plastic, HiBird, headlamp assembly can safely accommodate a 45W/45W, H4 bulb, it might melt from the heat produced by an HID conversion kit. The Zong uses a headlamp assembly with a steel reflector, and a glass lens. Therefore, Max_Damage has not had any heat problems with his HID conversion kit.

Watt is a measure of energy, so 35watts lamps produce light and heat that equal 35 watts. The HID lamps produce more light less heat but it all equals 35 watts. Think LED light, they produce light more effeciently.
Thank you, Lynn; you are correct. A 35W HID bulb produces more light than a 60W halogen bulb, because the arc discharge system employed by HID bulbs burns more efficiently than the tungsten filament system employed by halogen bulbs. Therefore, HID bulbs actually burn cooler than halogen bulbs. As the Saturday Night Live character, Roseanne Rosannadanna, used to say, “Never mind.”

Right you are, Doc. Since BillR has successfully converted his plastic headlamp assembly to a 45W/45W halogen bulb, it appears the Hi-Bird headlamp assembly should be able to accommodate the heat produced from an HID bulb. Have I overlooked any other factors that might prevent an HID conversion?

Only potential obstacle I see is a place to mount, and weatherproof, the ballast.

I have installed a rectangular halogen seal beam lamp in the headlight/fairing shell of my pantera. It is a 45/65 watt H4666 about 4"X6-1/2" and does a better job than the standard headlight. I throws light to the sides so it make turning much safer. Lynn
