I agree with your buddy. The only reaon to seal a battery is if it's being used in the passenger compartment of a car. Your battery gets hot with normal use and charging and expels gases; it's a good idea to let it breathe.
A guy at a battery recycler said that you could definitely immerse a battery in water, as long as water didn't get inside the battery.
