Best sprocket ratio for offroad riding.
Ok. So I was speaking to the local KTM guru in my city & he said that 3.6 is the best sprocket ratio for offroad riding. The ratio is obtained by dividing the number of the rear sprocket teeth by the number of front sprocket teeth.
My 250cc dirt bike came with 54 rear & 15 front. 54 divided by 15 = 3.6 I changed by rear to a 48 thooth & the ratio is now 3.2 Anyone else got any experience with these ratios? Which is better for off road? I miss the low down grunt in 2nd gear now, but obviously my top end speed has increased. Feedback anyone? |

The ratio really depends on where you engine makes power.
I have about a 2.5 ratio. I can still off-road, but its pretty high.

katoranger, my bike is only for off road use. it sounds as if yours is dual purpose. am i right? my only concern is with the 48/15 the bike is SERIOUSLY underpowered & lacks grunt! and 3.20 is not even that high?!?!

Your bike is also internally geared for offroad use too.
I would stick with the 3.6 ratio for offroad. Yes mine is a dual purpose and mostly street ridden. The stock ratio on my bike was 3.3 Allen
