Different carbs often require a different length cable. If that is the case you'll just have to try to see if there is enough adjustment. You could put the slide in without the cable attached to see if it'll idle down.

Good idea, I'll try that.

New jets aren't coming until Nov 2nd so I have a couple days.

So the new jets came today and while I had the carb off the ATV I took a look and you are right, it doesn't appear the throttle cable is long enough. When it's connected and cap screwed all the way down, it drops to about 3/4 of an inch above fully closed... So high, that the adjustment screw doesn't even impact it (which explains why it seemed to do nothing).

I measured the original throttle cable at about 47" I'm looking to understand how to properly measure to buy a new one. From inspecting the cable it seems more important that the length sticking into the carb rather than the length of the cable itself. Is there a specific length that I should be targeting. Current one seems to be about 2.5" at it's longest, however that seems impossible to actually use once it's into the throttle (upper part, not sure what it's called).

The correct way to measure a cable is to measure the total length of the inner wire cable and also measure the length of the outer sheath. If the outer length you have is fine, you'll want to add 1 inch to the length of the inner wire and then shop around. It will have to be ATV-specific if you have a thumb throttle.


Click HERE to get an idea of what to look for when browsing for a cable. The cable shown is 31" overall, and has a 27" outer sheath


Ideally, you'll want a throttle cable with an adjustment fitting inline, for fine tuning the setting.

I went back and took a look again because I wasn't convinced after looking around online that 3" was not enough. With the inline adjustment all the way closed I was able to get it to work. Just spent 15 minutes playing with the adjustment screws and I think I got it dialed in to where it feels pretty smooth. Still a little clunky feeling, but good enough for what I need right now.

Once I get a bit more time I'll try adjusting again, but I think my neighbors were probably getting annoyed at me ripping up and down the driveway over and over
