I've heard of people doing that. I can see where it might be very useful especially if there are clearance issues. I just use my long needle-nose pliers to hold the square tip while tightening the nut. Then recheck the clearance of course, as we all should do.

Yeap, much thanks to @JerryHawk for pointing me in that direction in the past, it works great to hold that vanve stem while you work on tightening the nut

I made that kind of tool when I got my CX500 back in 2010. I have an open end wrench that fits the adjusters but twirling the dowel stock with the screw in it is a heck of a lot quicker.

The only difference is mine was more high tech. I used a wire nut on the end of the screw.

I have seen a Suzuki owner with impossible clearance make one with a reduced length square drive screw screwed and glued into a square wooden dowel numbered on each side so it's blatantly obvious when you reach a perfect 1/4 turn and also by centering the edges 1/8 turn. Also affixed was a long length of string to allow any dropped tool being easily retrieved out of the engine. He made two, an ultra short and a long for both front and rear cylinders on the V-twin he had.
