The Art of Wheel truing
Factory wheels are usually laced by machine, and are usually under tensioned. Tighten the spokes no more than 1/2 turn each around the entire circumference of the wheel. One way to check for even tension is to lightly strike each spoke with a screwdriver handle. Once all the spokes produce the same tone, the wheel is evenly tensioned. Than adjust for any side to side or out of round wobble. Once the spokes are properly tensioned, you should check the true by spinning the wheel and eyeballing for side to side wobble every couple of months (2-3 K miles). If you have a particularly hard impact, you might wanna' check it immediately after that ride.
Truing a wheel is one of those tasks that it's better to catch early rather than let it go too long and end up potato chipping a rim. I used to ride bicycle at a competitive level and weighed about 220 at that time. I quickly learned that preventative maintenance on your wheels can prevent a long walk home, or worse yet, serious injury. There are lots of videos & books on the subject, which is a good starting point, but it takes lots of experience to get good at truing. It might be worth taking it to a shop to get the wheel dialed in, and than start doing regular maintenance truing. Good luck! Last edited by Wisemanimal; 11-14-2021 at 05:54 AM. Reason: Add'l info |
