It looks like the Suzuki DR650 (The Australian Bush Pig) has worked its way to the top of the heap, so far.
Torquey, air/oil cooled so there's not any extra parts or fluids to deal with, still has a carb for ease of tuning and maintenance, have tons of aftermarket parts and bling available, and are very reliable.
When you live in the sticks and don't have a dealer down the street, these things are important.

The DR650 is an excellent bike, for all the reasons you already mentioned. IMO you can't go wrong there..

You absolutely cannot go wrong with a DR650! The maintenance is about as straightforward and simple as it can possibly be, and the cost of ownership is next to nothing. I don't remember if I sent you this link or not, but ProCycle has an unbelievable selection of repair parts and Farkles. Definitely worth a look: www.procycle.us/model/suzuki/dr650
