this is definitely in the FWIW department... but I didn't find this info anywhere online... so I'm posting this here for posterity

Normally you shouldn't have to even think about this... if your headlight doesn't come on, and the bulb tests good, then there's a chance it's the Headlight Controller at fault. You'd buy a new one and plug it into the existing harness. But in my case, that wasn't so. The previous owner had done some shenanigans with slicing in a "replacement" connection pigtail for a headlight controller ...but failed to wire it correctly This sent me on a goose chase to figure out what the actual pinout was. Operation successful.

This is for the GY6 125cc - 150cc common headlight controller with pt# 38400-F8-A000 (this part number yielded very few search results for me btw...
