GY is the generic Chinese code for a dual sport motorcycle. The number following the GY designation indicates a model number. The model number is sequential, but not related to the year of manufacture. A GY-3 bike is a later model than a GY-2 bike, and a GY-5 bike is a later model than a GY-3 bike.

Several companies around the world make versions of that same engine, all based on the Honda CG125 engine. There are some minor differences from brand to brand but for the most part if you look for parts for a CG200 they'll fit. The Lifan version of that engine is probably the most common in the US and it's model number is 163FML. The engine in my Lifan 200 GY5 is the same except it has the balance shaft, model number 163FML-2M.
The starter itself should be pretty robust but it's easy enough to pull apart and have a look. There's not much there to screw up. |

That's what I thought, until I discovered the GY6. It is an engine designation, and it refers to a CVT motor that is patterned after scooter motor. It is commonly used in ATV's and buggies as well as scooters. What's more confusing is that it can be 50cc, 125cc, 150cc or 250cc.
On top of that, the 250cc version is liquid cooled, and a different design than the other three displacement versions. None of this is really material to the discussion, except to say that there isn't a lot of logic in the GY designations.

That's one of my favourite animations. It reveals that the CG engine uses only one cam lobe to bump both pushrods. It fascinates me.
