TaoTao 250 starter problem

Hello and thanks for your help in advance. I have a 250 Taotao atv that has run well for about three years. I noticed the starter was sounding a little rough a couple of months ago. Now it will not start. The starter is working but seems to be free spinning without turning over the motor. If it were a car problem, I'd say it was the solenoid but I don't see one on the atv. I'm guessing Ive lost a gear or something similar. Any ideas on where to go from here? thanks

further questions

Yes, I got the chain cover and the stator cover off. Do I need a tool to get to the starter clutch? I cant turn the nut without. I tried to find a video of the procedure but no luck yet. Thanks
Sy

Thanks. I did get the case open and the clutch is free spinning in both directions so I assume its bad. I am unable to get to it however. Is there a tool for removing the rest of the stator to get to it?

You'll need to pull the flywheel to replace the starter clutch. There is a flywheel puller tool available that should be the same as the Honda CG125 tool. Don't use a gear puller that grabs onto the flywheel with 2 or 3 arms because it will usually destroy the flywheel.
