Hawk Oil cooler install questions
Working on an oil cooler upgrade and I got the bracket made and position right with some work as it is tight. The cooler is the oil pump style I think about 186 ml with an in line filter.
I read the thread on the oil cooler and watched JerryHawk video but I want to be sure about couple things not knowing these CB engines. So set up talks about pumping the oil from the bottom of the cooler up through the top to avoid a check valve. What is the pressurized side of the cooler inlet adapter? Appears it would be the center inlet stud with seal on the end correct? The outer would drain back to the engine sump? Pumping up through the top of the cooler then when the motor is stopped the top drain line drains back to the engine sump? So when you install the cooler then you need to use the syringe to fill the cooler from the top until its full which will fill the drain line back to the pump inlet to get the amount of additional oil added to the system? |

The oil pump doesn't actually pump the oil through the cooler, It sucks it through. The pump acts like a check valve and not allowing the cooler to drain. If you have the cooler mounted vertical as I have mine you will want the line the runs to the center of the adapter to go on the bottom of the cooler. The line on top of the cooler will suck the oil from the sump. The picture below will show the flow path of the oil.

You can cut the lines you have and shorten. Use a hack saw or Dremel with a cutting wheel to cut the crimped on portion off then use regular hose clamps to reattach.

if you even dont know which way the oil is pumping just leave the two ends unattached and kick it over several times and you will then know which way the oil is going.

I just took a couple of zip ties and hooked it to the lower part of the frame to keep the lines tight to the bike and out of the wheels way i also keep the original cover and spring assembly in my top box so if it ever gets ripped on the trail i can just lay the bike down and make it home.

I know this is an old thread, but I’ve been searching fruitlessly…
Will the suction allow for a small in-line paper oil filter? Thanks!

More importantly, if you DO add an oil cooler, you had better make sure that there is oil, not air at the inlet of the pump. If the inlet experiences air, there is NO OIL PRESSURE. This is much more dangerous than having no filter! Adding an oil cooler is a great thing if your engine is overheating in your environment (heavy high performance use or high temperatures where you live). But make sure you have a full oil cooler and lines
