Airplane camping in the Idaho wilderness
I've said it before, I feel so sorry for poor Spud.
He's a great guy. Loves adventure and the outdoors, but there is nothing to do in his home state :-( I decided to share his suffering and take the plane camping at a backcountry airstrip in the River Of No Return Wilderness (the name says a lot, doesn't it...) called Johnson Creek. JC is the center of my happy universe. I go there as often as I can. About an hour and fourty minutes from my home airport. Fourth of July in the Happiest Place On Earth, JC. Bike ride up to Riordan Lake. Super difficult dangerour rocky climb. Not recommended if you are not a strong rider and have a strong heart at 6500+ feet. Riding to the hot springs. Not so easy either ;-) Hells Canyon Fourth of July parade, Yellowpine style! The Maule in repose. Riding to the gold mine. Packed to the gills.

That looks beautiful, Doc! Man...with that load, it's a good thing those Maule's are made to take off straight up with little runway!
Hmmm.... I thought maybe you had Spud as hostage. He's been a wee bit MIA as of late!

I don't fish much but plenty of people were fly fishing. Some seemed to be doing pretty good as well.
There is a lake in Washington I like to fly to. Google Rimrock Lake/Tieton airstrip if you like. I've been know to fly there with inflatable air mattress to bob around.

Hey Doc What kinda bird you got? I was thinking about getting a plane a few years back when I was looking into getting my PPL. I've done a ton of research on different planes so I kinda got addicted to them. My Bro in Law's boss has a Socata TBM 850. it is sort of a killer so when they use it for official company business they hire a pro. A shooting buddy of mine who is a professional pilot said to never get in it without a pro flying it.
I like to looks of the low wings but I hear the high wings are easier to fly and land. |

The TBM is a Holy Grail of airplanes. No mere mortal can afford one, but properly trained its certificated for single pilot operations. A single turboprop. Complex and needs training and respect but not hard to fly in and of itself. It's just an airplane and wealthy owner/operators are out there. No type rating required. I suspect I could be proficent in it with about 40 hours of training. Not that I'll ever get that option...
High or low wing. Each has advantages and disadvantages but it's all about personal preference. I prefer (as do most pilots) a high wing for off airport operations. I would not say either one is easier or harder to fly. My plane is a Maule MXT7-180.
