Engine goes out
Hi guys,
I was on the road yesterday riding my Skyteam v-raptor 250 70-80 KpH when all of a sudden the engine went out and I had to stop. It would start up again, but as soon as I turned the throttle it went right back off. Had to call the Automobile Club ADAC to get towed home. Any idea where to look first before I take everything apart? Thanks.

Aside from the typical fuel, air and spark issues, I'd suspect the CDI.

Mine have been spark plugs on a few occasions, and empty fuel tank once or twice. For more technical 'stuff' Weld's suggestion is probably the next thing. I am quite sure CDIs are pretty easy to change, too.

I also suspect a faulty CDI unit.

Does it cut suddenly, like from the kill switch, or it bogs a bit before dieing? Do you have fuel? Reserve?
Sudden stop usually means electrical problem, while bogging must be fuel related. Since it did start, I vote for carb problem - most probably a clogged jet or something, as we don't have filters on these bikes and the tank is metal. Try running it with the choke pulled up as the its jet bypasses all other jets. I had this issue once, and I "fixed" it by knocking the carburetor with a screwdriver handle. Apparently the clog dropped and it was all good. |

Hi,
first I checked the spark plug to see how it looks.. black. I think that means more gas then air, right? Theres enough gas in the tank and is on "on" position arrow down. Opened the top lid of the carburetor to see if needle ist stuck or something. Seems to be ok. Checked air box if filter was dirty, but it not dusty or dirty. Checked screw from intake going to air box - it was a little loose and tightend it. Then put everything back together. She starts up and stays on, but now only if choke is off and full throttle, very loud and smokey. Let go throttle and she goes out right away.

I stongly suspect a faulty CDI unit. Do you have a spare CDI unit? If not, I certainly encourage you to purchase a spare. A spare CDI unit greatly facilitates troubleshooting the electrical system, even if your present CDI unit is good.

I don't have a spare one here, but I will purchase one. I'll keep you posted.

Do I need one that is DC or AC? They have both. The one is if it gets the power from the battery and the other one if it gets from the generator.

You have to check your wiring diagram to determine whether you need an AC-CDI unit or a DC-CDI unit. Can your dealer help you determine which CDI unit you need?

Can't ask dealer, but I have the electrical diagram.
If I'm reading this diagram correctly, the CDI ist not directly connected to battery. Since its not connected to "Gr" or "R". Bk/R and B/R is going to Magneto but none directly to battery. So AC would be correct?

I believe that AC is the most common.

I go by the physical size. AC and DC CDI units are quite dissimilar, so it's easy to match your specific part. The difficulty comes in whether or not the replacement is designed for an alarm system. If it is, you might see weird symptoms, like the engine will start without a key.
