Production Year vs Model Year

Just curious, I was taking apart my bike yesterday, and a sticker said the production year was 2005, but the bike was being sold as a 2007 model. Is it common for these bikes to have a production year and model year so far apart? Or are they supposed to be the same?

A 2 year difference is unusual but not unknown, I remember some years ago when I was in the motor trade a customer wanted an unusual specification (small engine with an automatic transmission) the car that arrived from the factory had been built 3 years previous.
