After I took these pics, I rode it 10 miles, let it cool and actually WASHED it! Some engine degreaser, S100, and judicious use of a power washer made a huge difference. :!:
I bought a can of Krylon Fusion in gloss white to do the side panels, maybe tomorrow. Getting there! I know the can says no primer is necessary, but would it give me a better result? I was planning on experimenting on the backsides of the side panels and the rear fender which I'm replacing anyways, but wanted opinions.

Looking good... Did you choose white so you can show off the mud better?

I'm just wondering how well white Fusion will cover red plastic. Oh well, we'll know tomorrow!

We're going to need photos of the freshly bathed Dirt Rat.
The white looks really good. Son of Weldangrind has his eye on a spare white acerbis fender I have for my XR; maybe we'll make some changes after we learn about your rear fender experience. BTW, I think that Krylon would hook better without a primer.

The paint on the side panels is drying. The Fusion worked well, once I got past the awkward pink phase!
We'll see how well it holds up although any scrapes or scratches can be very easily fixed. I also repainted the kickstand. It had no paint left on it and was rusty. Next step is the exhaust. Pics soon!

Hey I made some good progress today!
Side panels off, rear fender painted and mounted. The fender is cracked badly and will be replaced, I just wanted to see how it looked the right color and in place: My shiny painted kickstand. Only a Chinarider would appreciate this! The header drying on an XR100 drying rack 8) ! Muffler. Both were painted with Rustolem Flat Black BBQ paint: Mounted again: Panels painted and looking quite good! The Dirt Rat getting spiffy! Closeup of new engine and exhaust: I did my painting in a heated shop seperate from the house. Here's my YZ80, leftover from the Big D. It was my stepson's. They left it here when they blew town and I can't sell it as I don't have the title. Ugh. It was a fast and competitive racebike. I rebuilt it... My friend Roger's kid's 2 XR100's. I fixed them up. They don't look nice but they are safe reliable and run great now that I went through them. Roger helped and learned a lot in the process. It was fun!

I will repaint the swingarm next week when I have the wheel off to replace the rear sprocket and drive bushings. I have new original looking swingarm decals also coming in the mail. I'm also waiting on a new blue seat cover.
Last step will be repainting or touching up the frame. I will NOT be removing the engine. I'm not going to push my luck!

The bike looks great, Doc! Krylon Fusion spray paint is an excellent product. I really like the red, white, and blue color scheme!
