I think I had asked you where you lived a while ago, and forgot you are a quite a distance east of me. I would like to try the ride to Cabo since I heard the road all the way there is all fixed up and there are more gas stations (maybe motels) where it used to be the middle of nowhere.

Chineros, I cut the exhaust and found there is no packing on it. The seller claims his exhaust are packed. What should I expect from a less than 30 bucks exhaust? you get what you pay. Anyway I will stop by some motorcycle shops and hopefully will find the packing. In case I canĀ“t find it, what could I use instead? Any problems running without the pack? I will post some pics as soon as I can.

The packing is used solely for sound reduction. If the packing is missing, the exhaust noise is louder. The packing, or lack thereof, does not affect the operation or power of the engine in any way. If the muffler is properly packed, the exhaust noise will be lower.

I'm sorry; I was not exactly correct. Proper packing will help the engine to perform slightly better. However, the main benefit of proper packing is noise reduction. If you pack your muffler properly, you will not notice an increase in engine performance, because the increase is very slight. However, you will notice the sound is significantly reduced.

That comes with a bit of a caveat.
Can you see right through the pipe, from end to end? If not, packing might actually choke the muffler to the point where the bike won't run. It depends entirely upon design.

Of course, Weld is correct. I was assuming you have free flowing exhaust. When you took the muffler apart, did you take any photographs? If so, please post them.

I found the packing at the end of the muffler. I did not find it at first because the packing was burned. BTW, the packing the vendor used is a home insulator. I will pic more pics once the muffler is ready. I only need to stop by the shops and see if I can find the packing or autozone.

If you can get it, this is the packing material you should purchase. I use this packing material, and it is excellent. Nothing else will last as long as this packing material, and it is a superb value.

I use something very similar to what Spud uses.

I use stainless steel scouring pads from the grocery store. Lasts forever.
BTW Reducing the size of the outlet slightly makes a big difference in sound level. |

I've heard of using the SS scouring pads. Is the exhaust noise a little louder with the scouring pads versus conventional packing?
