Zongshen Carbie + Tank Conversion (with pics)
here s some pics of my carbie conversion. i was going to post them last year, but didn t get round to it before i went overseas. been away, come back, wasnt washed out in the flood, so it is time...
as you can see, the mikuni just fits, even though it is tilted ever so slightly. second, the rubber inlet between carbie and cylinder never gave a snug fit with the old carbie, so what you see on the pics is at least tight. third, the nox mounting bracket extension with its rubber cover, which i made up, supports the carbie, which is positioned firmly. fourth, the accelerator cable has just enough space, but i screwed the spacers from the old carb into the cover plate of the mikuni, i.e. i am using the old cable with minimal modification. fifth, you ll need a longer fuel which now has to go across to the other side. advantages: better bike, jets easily changed w/out removing the carbie, currently using mikuni 240 (whatever that is in real terms). the points mentioned above wouldn t stop me to do the conversion again. (the zs rocks and the world stares as i accelerate from 50ks to 90 ks in third gear and jump forward when shifting into 4th...;-) or so i imagine). it s hot now in this part of the world (34 C), riding is a good way to keep cool. one more thing: i ve learned that when using a unifilter with the above setup, make sure the battery drainage tube doesn t contact the foamfilter. acid and foam don t go together well and those clear plastic tubes split easily.

That rubber boot looks like it's just barely hanging on. Good to hear that there was a boost in performance.
![]() Is that a flat slide carb?

the header is a custom piece and the muffler is off a 250 china cross bike.
i cut half of the stock air box out on the cylinder side. instead i use a conical foam uni filter which fits onto the angled stock intake hose. the filter is concealed behind the side panels and the remaining air box plastic shields it from debris. spud, i also fitted a 12 liter clarke tank recently, to complement my carburettor modification. :-)

Got a photo of the installed tank? What was the original application?

carbie & tank conversion pictures
here s my zs in all her glory. clarke fuel tank makes her look bulkier, which fits the overall design.
a few additional carbie pictures show the ease of operation of choke, the support bracket and the missing front side panel because it would make the petcock hard to reach. the idling speed screw is in easy reach as well. the last picture shows the left side, there s a small gap now. btw: a touch of colour: the barkbusters are from ego, the front fender from polisport. the rest is stock, apart from the grips. a pair of dunlops is next, or should i get bridgestone? your comments are valued. ![]()

Thank you for posting the nice photos, ZS.
![]() ![]() If I may ask, what kind of riding do you do, and what model tires are you considering for your Zong? Spud ![]()

i love the fuel tank and the aluminium bash guard (yamaha tw 200) - btw, these ideas i got from looking at spudrider's bike. i set the tripmeter to record my mileage with the mikuni, should be interesting to compare. i ve tried this before, but i had to fill up during the flood coz many servos were shut.
as for tires: i d like street tires, best grip in dry and wet. i commute on the zong most days, 40 ks round trip. for trails i have the xl185s, for longer trips the most recent addition to my range of vehicles, a suzuki dr400sm.

That sounds like the perfect stable; the XL185S off road, the Zong for light trails and street driving and the dr400sm for greater distance.
Got pics? ![]()
