Oil temp gauge ?
Has anyone tried mounting an oil temp gauge on these little 223 thumpers?
If so, where did you mount a sensor? |

The one I used on my Hawk was built into the oil drain plug.

Built in, as custom, or you found a drain plug that had the sensor and wire in it?

I've seen these, but would prefer it on the dash, as opposed to looking down between my legs. This is also for one of the sportbike type clones, so bodywork would possibly block the view.

With respect, what is a oil gauge going to do for you? Seriously if it read high, do you shut down the engine or speed up to cool it? Using a thicker viscosity oil could help also! You could also tee into your oil cooler lines for the sender. Just don’t understand why, but willing to learn why the gauge may be needed. My bike is the Hawk DLX 250.

I had one of the dipstick oil temp gauges years ago and it worked just fine. Like this one from Amazon

You could quickly look down at it or stop in a safe place and then look at it. It is not something that you would look at that often. I will see if I can find my oil temp thermometer and try it out.

Found my temp gauge. At rest the cold engine was about 22 C or 72 F. After a 12 mile ride in traffic up to 50 MPH the reading is about 78 C or 172 F.
I can leave the thermometer in the engine with no oil leak so will leave it in and do some more checking as I ride. Don't recommend looking at it as your ride but ok at a stop. It is not like the oil will cool down immediately when you pull over to stop and look at the gauge. From what I read the engine oil might start to break down at 275 F.
