TBR7 smoking
My TBR7 has started smoking when hot. It started smoking smoking a few days ago all at once. It also has a lot of crankcase blowby. The piston, rings and bore look perfect. Possibly a valve seal? I've worked on engines my whole life and this has me stumped.

Hmmmm. Wrong oil? Too much oil? Really dusty environment just getting sucked into the engine on a regular basis? Valve clearance adjusted? Do you have a nasty habit of doing burnouts 5x a day for 30mins at a clip? lol. Dirty fuel leaving deposits? Getting enough airflow to the engine? Sounds like you might as well tear the whole thing down and build it back up again nice and clean.

May I suggest a compression test is needed. Make sure the valves are properly adjusted beforehand. Check compression with the carb fully open and note results, anything below 90/100 psi is marginal for running. Now pull the tester and pour a teaspoon of oil in the sparkplug hole, reconnect tester and repeat test. If compression jumps up after this it's a giveaway your piston/rings are worn out. Good luck, happy hunting,

Went out for a long ride, even pushed my TBR7 on the highway for a while. I now have copious amounts of oil coming out of the crankcase vent.
Good source for engine rebuild parts? Will confirm with a compression test soon. |
