Making a Tao Tao reliable?

Hi, guys. I was wondering if there are any things I can do to a new Tao Tao to make it not die after a year. Are there any upgrades or things I can do so that it will last me at least a few years? I really want a 50cc scooter but I have a $1000 budget so I can't get anything too fancy. Also what do you recommend for <$1000? Thanks for your help
