used the spare circuit board aluminum i have on hand and bent up some guards for a little support for the bags. the support is attached to the muffler guard with a couple of spacers. i got out and did a test run with full camping packs for about 60 miles today and there was very little heat on that plate. i could hold my hand on the aluminum with no issue so it is cool enough for prolonged use. if there is no support, these are basically useless so keep that in mind before you buy. bought the side bags and top bag. i will go camping but will probably remove the top bag so i can strap on my large duffel across the rack and side bags. the combo bag set was around $100 bucks and seems to be a pretty good solution for daily my adventures. i like the fact that they are soft bags so when i crash i don't snap those hard packs and their mounts. the yellow rain gear is neatly tucked away in their own zippered pockets and are stitched on so they will always be with the packs.
yes, that rear fender is a little jacked and i definitely need to get that sorted out but in the meantime it will have to ride with plastic tie wraps for now.
all in all, if you don't mind a little imperfect fit (as you can see) and want a little extra space these are a simple solution
