Pulse Adrenaline battery overcharging

I had a rescue call from my son last night - his 125 Pulse Adrenaline had just suddenly cut out and was smoking and dripping from around the battery compartment...

Sure enough, the (Lithium Ion) battery was completely shot, so I bought a lead replacement today, but I'm thinking that a battery that's less than a year old should not be self-destructing like that, so my question is, should I risk putting the new battery on, even just to get it home (about 12 miles),or should i get a new regulator/rectifier first?
Cheers
Roger

(P.S. My LF200GY2 is now back on the road following last year's theft and subsequent recovery; I bought another one for spares and completed a fairly comprehensive transplant & re-build job - I'll post some pictures soon )
