Rebel T3 won't run unless choke on

I have pissed with these so much, I should know how to resolve this.

Originally, the intake pipe was cracked, which I replaced. Once reassembled, it would not stay running. Would start, then stall after a second or two. Took off performance carb, and put original carb back on. Same problem. Discovered it was leaking between that stupid plastic spacer between carb and intake pipe. Resealed with gasket compound.

Now it starts and runs with choke on, but as soon as I take choke off, it stalls. Does this mean it is too lean? If so, then do I play with the air/fuel mix screw, or do I adjust the needle (up to richen, correct?)?

EDITED TO ADD; also installed new plug, just in case...
